Several accessibility upgrading works have been carried out in the dams of Valdabra (Huesca) and San Bartolomé (Zaragoza): PMR accessible paths and fishing platforms have been built.
Thanks to an agreement signed about two years ago between the Gobierno de Aragón (regional government) and Obra Social La Caixa (a savings bank foundation) which is aimed to improve access to natural environment and lesiure areas, besides promoting the labor and social insertion of underprivileged groups, accessibility upgrading works have been carried out in the Valdabra dam.
Every year, around 25,000 fishing fans visit Aragon: more than 600 have some kind of impairment. Huesca. Given the increasing interest in sport fishing and with the purpose to facilitate the practice to all, the Caixa and the Government of Aragon, in collaboration with the Aragonese Federation of Pesca and Casting, have carried out this project in the dam of Valdabra, in the municipality of Vicién, some 9 km from Huesca.
These works that facilitate access for people with reduced mobility include the installation of a floating platform, entering 12 meters in waters of the dam, the preparation of an access path of 1,750 meters (draining and compacting the firm) and the construction of an accessible footbridge to get to the platform, equipped with hand rails on both sides. All materials are designed to endure the weather inclemencies as well as to offer security to all users: wood of HD, great resistance and nonskid. The used structure is of galvanized steel, similar to the one used in the seaports. A parking lot with four reserved bays for disabled people is being built in the near future.
The agreement between Social Obra the Caixa and the Government of Aragon has also planned and carried out the improvement of accessibility for sport fishers in Embalse of San Bartolome in the municipality of Biota, about 100 km from the town of Saragossa, The main works have consisted on the consolidation and adaptation of more than 70 mts of border as a fishing base, construction of a parking lot and general improvement of the accesses for people with reduced mobility.
