Villajoyosa is located 32km from Alicante and at 8km from Benidorm This town in Costa Blanca stretches alongside a beautiful, palm-lined sandy beach which culminates in the little port. The longest and most central beach in Villajoyosa is the Playa Centro, a sandy beach bordered with palm trees, also known as Ciudad beach, running parallel to the promenade and wheelchair accessible. Playa Centro is the scene of the famous Moorish landing where, every year towards the end of July, the Berber invasion of the 16 th century is re-enacted. On that night the beach becomes the setting for a great battle between the Moors and the Christians that attracts crowds of visitors.
An Accessibility Plan is being carried in this town: one of the most representative projects is the connexion of Playa Centro with the Avenida Pais Valenciano by means of mechanical ramps which will allow wheelchair users, PMR and baby push-chairs to have an easier access to the beach. Citizens and visitors can have a look at the drawings and posters at the Tourist Office and see what the final results will be. Works have already begun and the first phase of the project should be concluded before summertime.
Villajoyosa is a town with many accessible cultural attractions. All amenities and services provided at the Archaeological Museum have been designed taking into account special needs of people with communication and/or mobility impairments. Less than 100 metres from the Archaeologichal Museum there's a parking lot just opposite to the Palacio-Museo de la Barbera gardens. Barbera dels Aragonessos is a Manor House built during the 18 th century: the House is fully adapted to wheelchair users.
The old walled village centre is a good place to stop and wander about. The Municipal Service of Guided Cultural Tours was established in 1998 aiming to introduce visitors as well as local people to the cultural heritage of the town and its municipal area. These visits (available in English, too) are carried out by specialised personnel under the responsibility of the Museum. Both the Old Town and the Chocolate Museum Tour are wheelchair accessible: touring the old village can be adapted to wheelchair users and will take you to many interesting places.
