CASA LIS. SALAMANCA.

The modernist palace Casa Lis, in Salamanca, houses the Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Déco where the Fundación Ramos Andrade collections are exhibited. The premises feature accessible facilities for PRM.

Casa Lis. Main facade. Click to zoom imageThe Casa Lis is a small modernist palace designed by the architect Joaquín Vargas. Whilst having several owners over the years, the building has been used for a variety of purposes. Most recently in the 1990s, it was transformed into a Museum to exhibit the collections of Manuel Ramos Andrade, an antique dealer from Salamanca.

The Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Déco first opened its doors to the public on April 6th, 1995: it holds 19 collections of decorative art from the late 19th century and early 20th century with some 2,500 well preserved items. Three are the main permanent exhibits: chryselephantines, porcelain dolls and glassware. The Museum is also the home of other collections, comprising porcelains, vases, enamels, jewels, bronzes, toys, sculptures by Hagenauer, fans, textiles, antique postcards and paintings by 19th century-Catalonian artists and Salamanca-born painters. Visitors can also admire furniture by artists from the NancySchool, such as Emile Gallé and Louis Majorelle, and the CatalonianSchool, represented by Gaspar Homar and Joan Busquets.

Click to zoom imageChryselephantine (delicate pieces, made of bronze and ivory, are representative of the Art Déco aesthetic) features more than 120 items by 52 sculptors, among which the best known artists of the Art Nouveau and Art Décomovement can be found, such as Chiparus, Preiss, and Poertzel, to name a few. The collection of porcelain dolls is one of the largest public exhibitions of such kind worldwide comprising 300 items. It incorporates pieces by some of the most significant French and German companies, such as Jumeau, Bru, Steiner, Simon & Halbig and Kestner. Glass paste vases, scent bottles, fine figures made of translucent and iridescent glass, lamps and table games are some of the glassware marvels that the visitor will admire; a collection made up of more than 200 items by the most important artists from the early 20th century (Emile Gallé, René Lalique, the Daum brothers, Charles Schneider.)

The building, once having gone across the yard, is accessed by means of a ramp in the main door: tickets are bought inside, in the lobby on the ground floor where the reception area (one height counter) is located. There is an adapted toilet on the ground floor, at the far end, on the right and next to the elevator. On leaving the elevator, in the first floor, one can find another adapted toilet. All exhibition halls/rooms are level and barrier-free and level (there are a couple of areas with a step, but ramps/curb cuts are provided there)

Souvenirs and high quality reproductions can be purchased at the accessible museum shop, located on the ground floor, next to the elevator.
